Rookie – Dominican Summer League Astros Orange 4, Dominican Summer League Guardians Red 3 (BOTTOM OF 2ND – SUSPENDED – RAIN)

NOTE:  For the best of Monday’s half of the suspended DSL Blue game that was completed yesterday, check out my Monday edition of ATF.

Juan Benjamin (ACL, 2B): 2-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI – Benjamin tripled his season (and career) home run total and nearly increased his RBI by 50% (from 11 to 16) with a pair of multi-run homers last night (a three-run shot with two outs in the second frame and a two-run blast in the sixth).  Even before this power outburst, however, Benjamin had been raking, slashing .313/.453/.493 through his first twenty games stateside, having reached base in all but one of them (and, in that case, he struck out in his lone plate appearance as a pinch hitter).  I’m pretty sure this won’t be the last time he’s featured in this column.

Alonzo Richardson (ACL, SP): W (5-0), 6 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP – Richardson has been rolling like a runaway semi truck the past few weeks.  In his last four outings (mix of starts and relief appearances), he has allowed one earned run in 19 total innings.  During that stretch, he has a 20:5 K:BB ratio and has seen his ERA cut nearly in half (from 3.21 to 1.64). It took a second season in Goodyear, but it seems that something has clicked for Alonzo.

Maick Collado (ACL, 1B): 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB – Collado’s OPS is back over 1.000 (1.010) after he extended his hitting streak to nine games (all of the game he’s played in July) with his third multi-hit game out of his last four (and fourth multi-total base game in his last five).

Sterling Romero (ACL, CF): 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K – Romero’s season-opening hitting streak hit double digits on Thursday as he returned from the All-Star Break with his fifth multi-hit game in his last six and sixth total in July (out of eight played).

Manuel Mejias (ACL, C): 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB – Mejias has multiple total bases in six of his last eight games (and he had only one plate appearance in one of the other two), a stretch during which his slash line has improved from .225/.326/.350 to .304/.392/.435.

Erickson Sarita (DSL Blue, PH-backup DH): 1-2, 1 BB – Sarita walked to get the game restarted and then singled in the ninth to give the Guardians Blue their final baserunner of the game and make himself the only Blue hitter to officially reach safely twice on Monday (RF Samuel Parra was on the basepaths twice yesterday, but reached the latter time on an error).

Yonaiker Garcia (DSL Blue, RP): W (2-1), 3 IP, 3 H, 2 K – Garcia pitched three shutout frames following the restart to pick up the individual victory in relief.  He has not allowed an earned run in his last three outings (7.2 combined innings) and has allowed only one tally in nine July innings.

Alex Paredes (DSL Red, C): 0-, 1 RBI – Paredes has the Guardians Red’s only RBI of the game so far (the other two runs scored on wild pitches) without getting a hit, doing so on a 4-3 groundout.
