Willie Hood’s Analysis:
Peterson started his collegiate career at Purdue where he appeared in 25 games, 24 in relief striking out 49 (9.09 K9) and walking 11 (1.50 BB9) over 48 innings. The Indiana native transferred to Wabash College for his sophomore season striking out 29 (12.63 K9) while walking 7 (3.06 BB9) in 20.2 innings. He transferred to the University of Connecticut for his junior season in 2021. As a junior, he struck out 82 (9.19 K9) with 21 walks (2.35 BB9) in 80.1 innings of work. The Huskies Friday night starter racked up 147 strikeouts (11.99 K9) with just 25 walks (2.04 BB9) this season in 110.1 innings. Peterson pitched in collegiate summer leagues in both 2019 and 2020.
The 6’6, 234 Peterson is a physical presence and intense competitor on the mound. He possesses plus control with the ability to locate to all four quadrants. There is some effort in the delivery and opportunity to shorten his arm length. It is a profile that Cleveland could try to optimize. The righty has a three-pitch arsenal with his fastball sitting 90-92 and touching 93 mph. His best pitch is a swing-and-miss-inducing low-80s slider that flashes plus. Peterson rounds out his repertoire with a mid-80s change of pace. As an older senior signing, he should sign quickly and start next season at a full-season affiliate (possibly Lake County).
In two seasons at UConn, Peterson went 18-4 with a 3.30 ERA (70ER/190.2IP) with 229 strikeouts to just 46 walks. As a team captain in 2022, the right-hander earned First Team NCBWA All-American, Second Team Collegiate Baseball All-
American and Third Team ABCA All-American Honors in addition to being named the New England Pitcher of the year, following a senior campaign in which he led the Big East in conference wins (7). Overall in 2022, the Chesterton, IN native
went 11-3 with a 3.83 ERA (47ER/110.1IP), while fanning a program-record 147 hitters. Prior to his tenue at UConn (2021-
22), Peterson spent the shortened 2020 season at Wabash Valley College (Mount Carmel, IL), where he went 2-0 with a 3.05
ERA for the Warriors. Before that, he spent his 2019 campaign at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN), pitching in 25
games and compiling a 2.20 ERA across 16.1 innings in Big 10 conference play for the Boilermakers.
