Nashville Sounds 6, Columbus Clippers 2

The winds were quiet over Huntington Park, and so were a lot of the innings as the Columbus Clippers (46-35) fell to the Nashville Sounds (50-30).

Overall, Nashvile was a better strike throwing team than Columbus had seen. The Sounds had a homerun from David Dahl in the top of the first inning, while the Clippers left the bottom half quiet. Bo Naylor evened the score with a homerun at the bottom of the second inning. However, the three hits Xzavion Curry allowed at the top of the third inning put the Sounds back in the lead. Brian Navarreto singled and Brice Turang followed up with an RBI triple. Dahl then proved to be Curry’s mortal enemy as he homered for a second time. Dahl scored and Turang also scored from third base.

The Clippers continued to be retired by the Sounds’ infield for five more innings. With Turang batting, pitcher Andrew Misiaszek managed to pick off Pablo Reyes as he tried to steal second base after a couple of passes back and forth between Tyler Freeman and Trenton Brooks. However, Navarreto, who was hit by a pitch two batters before, managed to score during the play. At the bottom of the eighth inning, Will Benson tried to make sure the Clippers did not go out quietly by hitting a homer to right field.

Columbus had been able to catch the balls on defense, but not been able to get the hits to make them worthwhile at the bottom of the innings. Yet the team still had a solid pitching lineup. Curry started and stayed in for six innings with only five hits and walked two batters. Kevin Kelly was the first reliever, came in at the top of the seventh and was switched out with Misiaszek after the first three baserunners. Misiaszek closed the top of the seventh inning with a strikeout and stayed on the mound through the rest of the eighth. The game closed with a player who had been up and down I-71 all season long. Anthony Castro came in at the top of the ninth and dealt nothing to fastballs. He struck out all of the three batters he faced.
