The Lynchburg Hillcats remain in a tightly contested first place race. Lynchburg sits a half game back of first place behind Salem and Carolina. Wednesday night’s game against Delmarva was postponed due to rain meaning the Hillcats will play three games in the next two days.

The Hillcats can clinch first place on Thursday by winning both games of the double header. This would be their first playoff berth since 2018. The last time Lynchburg won the Carolina League was 2017.

Overall, the Hillcats struggled this week. They went 2-3 over five games this week including a loss to last place Delmarva. The team ERA for the week was 4.91 and the team was cold offensively. The Hillcats struck out 40 times this week and only walked 12 times. Plate disciple has been the bread and butter this year but this week it simply was not there.

Prospect of the Week

OF Jorge Burgos: 7/21, 2 2B, 5 RBI, BB, 5 K – .333/.364/.429

Burgos had an impressive week at the plate with two doubles. He had a crucial go ahead double in the bottom of the eighth inning that eventually was in the difference in Sunday’s game against Down East. Burgos shown the clutch gene all season.

Who’s Hot

 OF Luis Durango: 5/15, 3 R, 3 K – .333/.375/.333

Durango took a scary shot to the head on Sunday but toughed it out and took his base. He was the game winning run, scoring from first on the Burgos double.

1B Will Bartlett: 5/13, 2 2B, RBI, 2 BB, 2 K – .385/.529/.538

Bartlett heated back up this week following a few weeks of shaking off the rust of his IL stint.

RHP Jack Leftwich: 5.2 IP, 8 K, ER

Leftwich has continued to excel as a starter. Every start this month Leftwich has struck out eight batters for 24 total this month. He currently has a 2.06ERA this season.

Who’s Not

P Damon Casetta-Stubbs: 4 IP, 9 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, K

Casetta-Stubbs really struggled with command this week as only 52% of his pitches were strikes. He has struggled mightily since joining the Hillcats from Lake County.

C Victor Planchart: 1-10, BB, 2 K – .100/.182/.100

Planchart made plenty of contact this week but couldn’t seem to reach base. He was great defensively but will have to find ways to reach base.

C Joe Donovan: 1-7, RBI, 2 K – .143/.143/.143

In limited action this week Donovan really struggled. His silver lining is he did knock in a run but will have to make more of his opportunities.
