Akron took the series on the road against the Hartford Yard Goats to push their overall record to 36-27. The use of the long ball and solid pitching performances allowed the ‘Ducks to win four games and stay competitive in their two losses. The big names of George Valera and Bo Naylor were joined by Jonathan Engelmann to combine for six homers on the week. Notably, middle infielders Jose Tena and Brayan Rocchio split time during the series, playing three games each, while Daniel Schneemann started all six games in the middle infield.

Player of the Week

LHP Logan Allen: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 11 K

Allen was electric during Thursday’s low scoring affair, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 11 which earned him Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors. After three straight rough outings in the second half of May, Allen has picked it up in June allowing just four runs and striking out 28 over 18.2 innings.

Who’s Hot

OF George Valera: 6-19,  2 HR, 5 RBI, 6 BB

Valera continues to show that he has figured out AA pitching. At Hartford, he smashed two home runs and came close to a third on a ball that hit high off the right field wall at Dunkin’ Donuts Park. Valera caught fire against Binghamton in mid-May and hasn’t looked back as he now leads the team with a .905 OPS, good for sixth in the Eastern League.

OF Jonathan Engelmann: 6-19, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 2B, BB

After hitting a grand slam during the series finale against Somerset on June 12, Engelmann was able to string together a much needed hot streak this week. After hitting two more home runs while driving in five against Hartford, he raised his season OPS to .655 after it sat at .490 on June 11. He also had an outfield assist, throwing out Hartford’s Ezequiel Tovar at the plate during Wednesday’s blowout win.

C Bo Naylor: 6-22, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 2B, 4 BB, SB

The Hartford Yard Goats wish Naylor had gotten the call-up to Triple-A a week earlier. The Canadian made them pay on Tuesday, blasting a ninth inning three-run homer to give Akron a 5-2 lead that they would close out. He homered again the following game in the blowout win. With Naylor’s promotion to Columbus, he will leave the Eastern League in third place on the OBP leaders list.

Who’s Not:

IF Jose Tena: 1-12, 2B, 5 K, 0 BB

While splitting time in the middle infield with Brayan Rocchio during the week, Tena was a non-factor offensively in three games played. He also had two errors at short during Thursday’s contest.

IF/OF Micah Pries: 3-21, HR, 4 RBI, BB, 8 K

Pries got the party started on Wednesday launching a first inning three-run homer. However, he did not have an impact the rest of the week getting on base just three other times while striking out plenty.
