Peyton Battenfield turned in a pair of strong pitching performances to bookend the Columbus Clippers’ trip to Iowa to face the Cubs. There were a few pitching blips along the way, but the team salvaged the trip with a 3-3 record, getting timely offensive performances from Tyler Freeman, Will Benson, Bryan Lavastida and David Fry along the way.

Prospect of the Week

INF David Fry: 6-18, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI – .333/.350/.611

There weren’t a ton of huge performances throughout the week, but it’s notable that Cleveland is keeping Fry’s bat in the lineup in Columbus. He’s splitting time between first, third and DH. He was the most consistent offensive performer throughout the week that made an impact on scoring runs. It’s interesting that Fry has yet to catch this year, even with Bryan Lavastida as the starter, you’d think he’d get 1-2 starts. But that’s going to Gavin Collins or Mike Rivera for now. Still, Fry’s bat has been solid this far.

Who’s Hot

INF Tyler Freeman: 7-24, 2B, 4 RBI, 4K/2BB, SB – .292/.370/.333

This was a good week for Freeman as he continues to get into a rhythm with his bat. He didn’t add any real power this week, just one double, but 10 times on base will suffice for him. He also already has racked up nine HBP this year, which is as many strikeouts as he has. That seems to be a way he gets on base now, making up for his lack of walks.

RHP Peyton Battenfield: 10.1IP, 10H, 2ER, 5BB/4K

It’s odd that Battenfield isn’t missing bats this year, just four strikeouts in two starts last week. But he’s keeping runs off the board and that’s what the name of the game is.

Who’s Not

RHP Tobias Myers: 4.2IP, 6H, 6ER, 4BB/2K

Myers’ velocity is down around 89-92 and his control is all over the place. That sends up some red flags. Hopefully nothing is wrong and Cleveland can help him get back to being the pitcher they traded for with reason back in October, because this version of Myers was not what they were looking for.

RHP Yohan Ramirez: 0.1 IP, H, 3ER, 3BB, K

Ramirez, just acquired in a trade, had a rough first game with his new org, only getting one out and allowing four base runners and three runs.

1B/OF Trenton Brooks: 3-13, RBI, 3K – .231/.231/.231

A year ago, Brooks experienced a bit of a power surge and he was getting on base. Now, he started the year hurt and he’s seen his playing time decrease with Bobby Bradley’s demotion back to Columbus, David Fry’s presence and a few outfielders taking up space.
