Scoreboard
HIGHLIGHTS
Mitchell Tolman (Columbus, 3B-SS): 3-5, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 E – While one of Tolman’s errors allowed the Bats’ two third-inning runs, he made up for it in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off homer to left field to hand Sunday afternoon’s rollercoaster marathon of a game to the Clippers.
David Fry (Columbus, 1B): 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB – Fry’s multi-hit Sunday, which got him over the Mendoza Line for the first time this season, was highlighted by a sixth-inning double that ran Bats starter (and highly-rated Reds prospect) Graham Ashcraft from the game after allowing his first Triple-A extra-base hit (after not allowing any in 22.2 innings in five starts).
Gavin Collins (Columbus, C): 3-3, 1 R, 2 RBI – Collins set a new season high in hits with this three-hit performance that made it six games in a row reaching base when he gets at least three plate appearances.
Hunter Gaddis (Akron, SP): ND, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R (unearned), 7 K – It’s becoming increasingly clear that Gaddis’ five-run disaster on April 19 was the outlier. In his other three outings, he has allowed only two runs (one earned) while striking out 21 (seven in each game) in 15.1 combined innings.
Joey Cantillo (Akron, RP): W (1-2), 4 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K – Cantillo continued the mound excellence in his half of the piggyback with his first scoreless effort of the 2022 season.
REHAB
Anthony Castro (Columbus, RP): BS (1), W (1-0), 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R (earned), 1 BB, 1 K – Castro’s rehab struggles were the reason that the Tolman walk-off was necessary.
BEST OF THE REST
Oscar Gonzalez (Columbus, RF): 2-5 – Eight-game hitting streak ends? No problem for Gonzalez, he’ll just start a new one.
Tyler Freeman (Columbus, 2B): 0-5, 1 RBI – Freeman’s RBI groundout was his first productive plate appearance at the Triple-A level.
Gabriel Arias (Columbus, starting SS): 0-3, 1 E – Arias left the game after six innings with what appears to be an injury.
Jose Tena (Akron, SS): 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K – Tena’s two-run homer in the sixth gave him his first multi-RBI game at the Double-A level.
Daniel Schneemann (Akron, 3B): 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI – Schneemann hit his first home run of the season as part of his first multi-hit game of the new campaign.
Brayan Rocchio (Akron, 2B): 2-4, 1 K, 1 CS – Rocchio got his May off to a hot start with this multi-hit effort.
George Valera (Akron, CF): 2-4, 1 K, 1 CS, 1 E – Valera recovered from a pair of identical 0-4. 1 K statlines on Friday and Saturday with this two-hit Sunday.
Joe Naranjo (Lake County, 1B): 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K – Naranjo finishes the series strong after going 1-for-15 in his first four games against the Lugnuts.
Petey Halpin (Lake County, starting RF): 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI – Halpin started the Captains’ scoring in the first with his first High-A homer and the second of his professional career.
Jhonkensy Noel (Lake County, 3B): 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K – Noel followed with a solo shot to left to make it back-to-back homers and a three-run first.
Korey Holland (Lake County, LF): 1-3, 1 3BB, 1 RBI, 1 K – Holland’s first triple of 2022 drove in C Micael Ramirez for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.
Tommy Mace (Lake County, SP): ND, 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R (earned), 1 HR allowed – Mace continued his early season pattern of a bad outing followed by a good one with this gem.
Milan Tolentino (Lynchburg, SS): 1-2, 1 BB, 1 K – Tolentino’s OPS is now 1.019 after being the only Hillcat to reach base twice on Sunday.
Reid Johnston (Lynchburg, RP): 4 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K – Like Gaddis, Johnston is a pitcher who is starting to make clear that his bad outing (5 ER in 2.1 IP – ironically, also on April 19) was the exception. In his other three appearances, he has allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out eleven in 10.2 shutout innings.
