Turning the calendar from August to September means rosters expand in Major League Baseball. Although, unlike in past years where the number of players rose to 40, ballclubs are subject to a much smaller total nowadays: 28. Nonetheless, Columbus has seen a flurry of moves lately, including the arrival of IBI’s No. 13-ranked prospect catcher Bryan Lavastida. While the former 2018 15th-round pick let off fireworks of his own via walk-off 3-run dinger, it was outfielder Steven Kwan who exploded for one of the best offensive weeks among Clippers performances this season. Two postponements forced a Sunday doubleheader as Columbus hosted St. Paul, taking down the Storm Chasers for its second series-win in the last three weeks. A pair of walk offs — including a 5-run comeback in Game 1 Sunday — showed the level of fight among the newcomers that saw both Cody Morris and Tanner Tully fire five-scoreless innings in their respective starts. The Clippers stand at 51-55 and place fifth in the Triple-A East Midwest Division.

Player of the Week

OF Steven Kwan: 13-for-22, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 3 2B, 8 R, 3 BB, .640 OBP

Promoted to the Triple-A level for the first time in his career, Steven Kwan made his presence known. The 24-year-old banged five-straight multi-hit games and mashed a two-run home run on Sunday. Kwan posted batting averages north of .591, reaching base in nearly two-of-three appearances. He may have forced his way into more regular at-bats.

Who’s Hot

INF Andruw Monasterio: 8-for-17, 4 R, 4 2B, 4 BB,

A mid-August promotee from Double-A, Andruw Monasterio has quietly hit Triple-A pitching well. Monasterio had three multi-hit games against the Storm Chasers, scoring four runs against them and doubling three times as well. He’s hitting .345 over 55 at-bats since arriving with the Clippers.

RHP Cody Morris: 5 IP, 0 R, 7 K ,1 H, 1 BB

The question about Cody Morris is no longer about rehab and more of ‘When will the Indians call him up?’ The 24-year-old spun his fourth outing of four innings of at least one run allowed. Morris struck out seven for the second time he’s done so with the Clippers, walking just one. His ERA is 1.33 in five games for Columbus.

Who’s Not

OF Will Benson: 1-for-18, 9 K ,6 BB, 2 R

A promotee about halfway through August himself, Will Benson never found his groove with the Clippers. The former first round choice went hitless in all but one game, despite leading the team with six walks. But, Benson also led the team with nine strikeouts, and his batting average dipped to .165 with Columbus.

LHP Kirk McCarty:  5 IP, 7 R, 4 ER, 6 H, HR, 6 K, 3 BB

Kirk McCarty started the 2021 season among the hottest of minor league pitchers. Since July 2, McCarty has just one win in eight starts. The southpaw was tagged for seven runs — four earned — across five innings of three-walks allowed. McCarty also allowed six hits for the third time in his last four starts.
