NON-COMPLEX STARTERS COMPOSITE LINE: 19.2 IP, 11 H, 4 BB, 26 K, 1 HBP, 1 BK
Cody Morris (Columbus, SP): W (1-0), 5 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 7 K – Morris dominated the Saints lineup to earn his first Triple-A individual victory. Now that he has the same number of starts as a Clipper that he did as a RubberDuck (five), those numbers can be fairly compared, and they are startlingly similar:
CLB: 20.1 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, 25:6 K:BB, 1.33 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, .159 opponents’ AVG
AKR: 20.0 IP, 14 H, 3 ER, 29:7 K:BB, 1.35 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, .197 opponents’ AVG
Clearly, he has adapted to facing more experienced hitters very quickly.
Peyton Battenfield (Akron, SP): W (2-0), 6 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HBP – Battenfield’s performance has been on an upward trajectory since being traded to the Indians organization. He took it to another level on Thursday night with his first scoreless outing as a RubberDuck. Through five Akron starts, his statline now includes a 46:7 K:BB ratio, .179 opponents’ batting average, and an 0.85 WHIP! The Indians pitcher development machine rolls on!
Xzavion Curry (Lake County, SP): ND, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 BK – Curry extended his shutout streak to three games. In those games, his combined statline is 16 IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 21 K, 2 HBP. When scoreless innings from the end of his fourth-most-recent start are included, his shutout streak stands at 17.1 innings (per Captains broadcaster Andrew Luftglass).
Jhonkensy Noel (Lake County, DH): 3-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI – Noel continues to rake in High-A. Through 13 games as a Captain, Noel has driven in a run per game while slashing .353/.411/.608. These numbers are close to the .393/.426/.693 slash that had everyone clamoring for his promotion from Lynchburg. Might we see him get a cup of coffee in Akron during the Double-A Northeast Championship Series?
Aaron Davenport (Lynchburg, SP): ND, 3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K – Davenport dominated in his non-complex debut. He continues to look like a guy who should skyrocket through the farm system fairly quickly.
Steven Kwan (Columbus, CF): 4-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI – Playing in the toughest level of baseball North America has to offer other than the major leagues clearly has not fazed Kwan in the least. In two multi-hit games at the Triple-A level, Steven is 6-for-10 after coming within a triple of the cycle while driving in five runs in only his second contest as a Clipper.
Roberto Perez (Akron, starting C): 1-3, 1 2B – Perez is 4-for-7 with a pair of doubles and as many RBI through the first two of at least three games in this rehab stint at the Corner of State and Main (He is playing tonight, for anyone looking to see his third game.).
Oscar Gonzalez (Columbus, DH): 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K, 1 HBP – Gonzalez’s three-run shot in the third was his eleventh as a Clipper (48 games) and his 24th of the season (97 games) including his time as a RubberDuck. This is compared to 37 TOTAL in 405 professional games through 2019.
Jose Fermin (Columbus, 2B): 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B – While a .750/.750/1.000 slash line is obviously unsustainable (although Jhonkensy Noel wasn’t that far off in Lynchburg), this spectacular level debut is hopefully a foretaste of coming attractions in terms of Fermin’s Triple-A form.
Connor Marabell (Columbus, 1B): 2-4, 1 K, 1 E – Marabell extended his hitting streak to nine games with the eighth multi-hit game of the streak. He also has hits in 13 of his last 14 games, including 11 multi-hit efforts. In those 14 games, he is 26-for-55 (.473) with 13 RBI, including seven in a four-day stretch from August 17-20 at the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals).
Andruw Monasterio (Columbus, 3B): 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 E – In his last five games, Monasterio is 10-for-19 (.526) with nine runs scored.
Brayan Rocchio (Akron, SS): 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K – Rocchio continues to mash as he extended his multi-hit streak to three games with his fourth multi-hit game in his last five.
Jose Tena (Lake County, SS): 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI – Tena, who now has 15 homers and 56 RBI in his first non-complex season, has started September with a pair of two-hit games.
Quentin Holmes (Lake County, CF): 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B – Holmes’ first RBI since August 13 broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth and gave the Captains the lead for good.
Petey Halpin (Lynchburg, DH): 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 Sac Bunt – Halpin extended his hitting streak to nine games with his fifth multi-hit game of the streak and eighth in his last 13 games.
Angel Martinez (Lynchburg, SS): 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K – Martinez continued his hot start to September (combined 5-9, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K).
Jake Fox (ACL, 2B): 2-4, 2 R – Fox rebounded from his first hitless game as a pro with his first multi-run game of his career.
Dayan Frias (ACL, SS): 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K – Frias extended his hitting streak to nine games on Thursday.
Alan Romero (DSL Blue, C): 1-3, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 PB – Like every stat line from this for Indians Blue, it is not notable in and of itself, but it’s part of a stellar start to Romero’s competitive career, which has seen him slash .438/.471/.625 over a career-opening five-game hitting streak.
Carlos Gutierrez (DSL Red – Suspended Game, CF): 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K – Gutierrez’s eighth-inning double was the only RBI hit for Indians Red in yesterday’s portion of the game.
Abel Brito (DSL Red – Scheduled Game, SP): ND, 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R (unearned), 1 BB, 3 K – Brito’s start highlighted an otherwise largely unremarkable scheduled contest. Unearned runs are nothing new to Brito, who has only been charged with seven earned runs out of the 14 total he has allowed.
