A lot of change is coming to Progressive Field.
While the name of the team will change to the Cleveland Guardians in 2022, the team will continue to play in Cleveland at Progressive Field through 2036 thanks to a new proposed lease deal that the city of Cleveland and the team agreed to.
The 15 year lease starts in 2022 in place of the old lease that expired in two years and there are two 5-year options after that.
A reported $435 million in upgrades to the 27 year old stadium are being made over the course of the 15 years through the city, county, state and team contributions. No new taxes are being put in place to fund the upgrades. It remains to be seen where specifically the money will come from for the upgrades. It was said during the press conference that the original sin tax that was put in place to pay for the stadium originally still had funds left over, approximately $2.5 million.
Upgrades to the Terrace Club and the long maligned upper deck right field area are part of the plan.
