Alex Call (Columbus, CF): 3-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB – While Call is only hitting ,233 through his first 17 Triple-A games, the power is most certainly there, as evidenced by his .267 ISO, the product of six extra-base hits (including five home runs) out of his 14 total hits at the level. While greater consistency will ultimately be necessary to succeed at this level and advance to The Show, the fact that his slugging percentage has only dropped .003 from his Double-A number earlier this season is a very good sign. Oh, and that power doesn’t manifest itself only at the plate: Call made an outfield assist yesterday as well.
Andruw Monasterio (Akron – Suspended game, 3B): 3-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 CS, Picked Off 1 time – The last two days have been impressive ones for Monasterio. Between Saturday and Sunday, he drove in three runs in a contest suspended overnight due to rain for his highest single-game RBI total since Memorial Day weekend. As impressive as this game was (except for the mixed results on the basepaths), he wasn’t done…
Andruw Monasterio (Akron – Scheduled game, 3B): 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 1 SB – While one could try to minimize his three-RBI performance by saying that it came in an eleven-inning game and he had an overnight rest within the contest (although all three RBI came in the Sunday portion of the game), four RBI in a seven-inning game without the benefit of a grand slam (or any home run) is indisputably awesome. One day. 17 innings. Seven RBI. Yeah, that’s definitely a highlight.
Bryan Lavastida (Lake County, C): 1-2, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP – Lavastida remains hot in the month of July. He has compiled 33 total bases in 15 games, including 17 in his last seven and nine over the past three days. His slash line for the month is .385/.469/.635 with ten doubles, a homer, 13 RBI, a :9 K:BB ratio, and four stolen bases in five attempts! Him and OF Will Brennan (1-for-4 with a run, double [his 20th of the season], walk, and caught stealing yesterday) give the Captains a pair of contenders for the org’s breakout player of the season.
Gabriel Arias (Columbus, SS): 3-5, 1 R, 1 3B – Arias’ three-hit game was his second of the series against St. Paul (the first, on Wednesday, came with a homer instead of a triple for the extra-base knock).
Gavin Collins (Columbus, C): 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 K – Collins has been driving in the runs in bunches recently as yesterday was his second straight multi-RBI game and third in his last five.
Brad Peacock (Columbus, SP): ND, 3 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K – Peacock’s three shutout frames were the highlight of a day that went in a generally downward direction for the Columbus pitching staff as the game went along.
Will Benson (Akron – Suspended Game, CF): 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB – Benson hit his ninth homer of the season and stole his eighth base in the two-day contest.
Daniel Schneemann (Akron – Suspended Game, SS): 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB – The suspended game was Schneemann’s third in a row with multiple total bases (a streak that would end in the scheduled game, although he did extend his on-base streak to five games in the nightcap).
Logan T. Allen (Akron – Suspended Game, RP): 4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R (earned), 1 BB, 4 K – Logan Allen the Younger came in to the game as the effective starter for the Sunday portion after the suspension following only frame relegated Saturday’s starter (Thomas Ponticelli) to an unscheduled opener role. While it wasn’t enough to win the game for himself or the team, his performance continued a stellar start to his Double-A career (combined 8.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, .219 opponents’ AVG, 1.08 ERA, and 0.96 WHIP in two outings for the RubberDucks).
Ben Krauth (Akron – Suspended Game, RP): BS (1), 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R (earned), 1 BB, 3 K – While the lone run he allowed was a costly one, Krauth’s effort was nonetheless a solid one as he continues to look like a Triple-A guy pitching below his level (combined 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 5 K in two appearances for the Mallards of Main Street). because he is.
Richie Palacios (Akron – Scheduled Game, DH): 2-3, 2 K – After a brief interruption in the suspended game, Palacios resumed normal service in Sunday’s scheduled contest.
Tanner Tully (Akron – Scheduled Game, SP): W (4-3), 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R (earned), 8 K – Tully nearly pitched a doubleheader-shortened complete game in a start that continued an impressive July (two earned runs and a 21:1 K:BB ratio in 16 innings in four games, including two starts).
Dakody Clemmer (Akron – Scheduled Game, RP): 1 IP, perfect, 1 K – Clemmer closed out the game with a perfect seventh for his first scoreless outing since July 1 vs. Bowie (Orioles).
Jose Tena (Lake County, 3B): 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB – Tena extended his hitting streak to five games with his fourth multi-hit game in his last seven.
Mason Hickman (Lake County, SP);: W (4-5), 6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R (earned), 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP, 1 Pickoff – Hickman broke a string of three straight starts allowing multiple runs with this stellar performance.
Jerson Ramirez (Lake County, RP): S (3), 1 IP, 2 H, 1 K – Yes, he allowed two baserunners, but remember that save situations are the ultimate pass/fail situation for a pitcher. Oh, and that Ramirez has passed all three such tests since his call-up to the Corner of SOM Center and Vine.
Alexfri Planez (Lynchburg, CF): 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K – Planez’s fourth-inning solo shot was responsible for half of the Hillcats’ scoring on Sunday.
Korey Holland (Lynchburg, RF): 2-3, 1 BB, 1 CS – Holland reached base three times, one-third of the Lynchburg total yesterday.
Josh Wolf (Lynchburg, SP): L (0-3), 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R (1 earned), 1 BB, 1 K – Wolf was the tough luck loser, largely due to the first-inning defensive miscues of the men behind him.
Zach Hart (Lynchburg, RP): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K – Hart reached 60 strikeouts for the season (42.1 innings), compared to only 32 walks (one intentional), on Sunday.
Jacob Forrester (Lynchburg, RP): 1 IP, 1 H – Forrester rebounded from a rough non-complex pro debut (3 ER on 5 H and 2 BB in two innings on Thursday) with this solid ninth.
