Willie Hood’s Analysis:

The Friday night starter for the Bruins returned to school after going undrafted in both past draft-eligible seasons (2017 and 2020). Pettway was a career starter in college, making 43 starts with one relief appearance under his belt. Things backed up for the right-hander, and he slid down draft boards as a response. The fourth-year arm made 15 appearances this season, all but one as a starting pitcher. The right-hander recorded one complete game on the season, logging 79 innings striking out 74 (8.43 K9) while walking 16 (1.82 BB9).

Another in a series of collegiate draft picks with the short arm circle and over-the-top delivery Pettway typically sits in the 87-91 mph range. He is an advanced pitch-ability arm that lacks velocity but has the know-how to work through a lineup a couple of turns. The right-hander capitalizes on his deception and includes a Johnny Cueto-esque pause in his delivery to throw off the hitter’s timing. There’s natural deception with his arm slot, and his ability to extend down the mound creates an additional layer of effectiveness. His best secondary pitch appears to be his low-80’s changeup that projects as an above-average option. The least of his three-pitch mix is his low-to-mid 70’s slider. As an older arm with limited velocity, he could find himself working out of the bullpen where his velocity could tick upwards. Pettway shows potential for 70-grade control and posted sub-2 BB9 rates three of his four years at UCLA. The right-hander is expected to sign in the coming days.
