The Captains have embarked on the second half of their longest roadtrip of the season as they went to Fort Wayne for six games, came home on Monday July 12, and then hit the road for six games in Lansing with the Lugnuts. Offense hasn’t been an issue on the trip, scoring at least four runs in all but one game thus far. But inconsistent starting pitching and a few bullpen mishaps have cost them.
Offensively, things aren’t going to change much in the second half for Lake County. They might lose a few hitters, maybe none at all, but they won’t be adding any hitters from Lynchburg at this point. However, they’re going to continue to get stronger pitching wise as finally Daniel Espino, Cleveland’s 2019 1st round pick joins their rotation. He’ll follow Xzavion Curry in the rotation pitching Thursday, as a big challenge to league hitters.
Bryan Lavastida: 6-19, HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 4BB, 3SB
Lavastida can just not be stopped. Not only is he hitting well and walking and getting on base, he’s stealing bases as a catcher and now has 11 this year to go with five homers. He’s having a legitimate breakout season.
Brayan Rocchio: 10-22, 2 2B, SB
Rocchio had the better batting average week technically but Lavastida had more power and steals. Still, you’re starting to see Rocchio settle in and the work he’s done to build his foundation in the box is really taking off.
Jerson Ramirez: 2.2 IP, 4K, BB
Ramirez has been fairly solid since he got to Lake County although two unearned runs crossed the plate on his watch because of an error, but he’s been about as advertised in the back of the Captains bullpen.
Mason Hickman: 4IP, 5H, 3ER, 3BB, 4K
While Hickman has had some good moments this year, he’s been inconsistent, not often putting more than back-to-back starts together. Like Burns, he is often working on his sequencing as far as what pitches he’s throwing in fastball counts and when he’s ahead. The three walks in four innings still aren’t great for a fly ball pitcher like Hickman and something he has to corral.
Aaron Bracho: 2-12, RBI, 2BB
He’s had a few good weeks, or games here and there, but largely has had a hard time translating his good BPs into the game with much consistency in the first half.
