HIGHLIGHTS
Trenton Brooks (Columbus, 1B): 2-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI – Brooks is off to a solid start to his Triple-A career with a three-game hitting streak. The third game in that streak, however, sent his hot start into hyperdrive. Yes, it’s only one game, but a two-homer, five-RBI night in one’s third game at the toughest level of minor league ball is still impressive.
Logan T. Allen (Lake County, SP): ND, 6.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R (3 earned), 4 BB, 8 K, 1 HBP – Allen was stellar through six innings (73 pitches, 4 H, 1 unearned R, 3 BB, 7 K). Given his pitch count, he came out for the seventh and promptly showed why no Captains starter had been this deep into an outing so far this season (keep in mind that the season is at the point it would usually be in early/mid May). while he may have tired late in the game, his first six frames still merit inclusion in the Highlights section of this column.
BEST OF THE REST
Oscar Mercado (Columbus, LF): 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K – Mercado extended his hitting streak to six games with his second multi-hit effort in a row and fourth of the streak. During this streak, he is 11-for-25 (.440) with seven extra-base hots (4 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR) and 3 walks for a 1.420 OPS (.500/.920). He also has a 14-game on-base streak going back to May 26.
Daniel Johnson (Columbus, CF): 3-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB – Johnson has also been hot at the plate recently, going 7-for-19, with two doubles, a homer, and five RBI during a four-game hitting streak (.368/.368/.632).
Dalbert Siri (Columbus, RP): H (1), 1 IP, 1 H – Siri is unscored upon on three hits in as many innings in his two June outings.
Will Brennan (Lake County, CF): 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B – Brennan continued his solid season with a pair of extra-base hits on Thursday night. He now has at least one hit in 26 of 29 games played during the 2021 campaign.
Kevin Coulter (Lake County, RP): L (2-2), 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R (unearned), 1 BB (intentional), 4 K – Coulter allowed the game winning run thanks to the inane extra inning rules.
Gabriel Rodriguez (Lynchburg, SS): 2-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E – Gabe-Rod’s fifth multi-hot game of the season was the only such performance for the Hillcats on a rough couple of nights for the Lynchburg lineup.
Yainer Diaz (Lynchburg, C): 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 PB – Diaz’s sixth-inning double drove in both of the Hillcat runs on Thursday and increased his season total to 16 in 26 games.
Miguel Vinicio (Lynchburg, RP): L (3-1), 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R (unearned), 1 BB, 2 K – Vinicio also pitched well as the opening pitcher for the Hillcats on Thursday, but took the individual defeat thanks to a lack of run support and a passed ball by Diaz.
Daritzon Feliz (Lynchburg, RP): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP – Feliz’s first scoreless outing since May 15 was not enough to win the game for the Lynchburg side.
