Quality of Opposition (QoO) numbers per Baseball Reference
DIAMONDBACKS PITCHERS (PROJECTIONS PER FanGraphs)
Caleb Smith (1st- started 6th innings): MLB #3 starter
Taylor Gilbeau (finished 6th inning): Triple-A reliever
Jon Duplantier (7th inning): Triple-A starter
Yoan Lopez (8th inning): MLB middle reliever
Anthony Swarzak (9th inning): Triple-A reliever, veteran invitee
STARTERS
Yu Chang (1B): 2-2, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB – An excellent night at the plate for Chang, who posted this stat line exclusively against Smith. From a positioning standpoint, this was his third game of the spring at first base, meaning he has now played the position more than he has at shortstop (two games) in the 2021 Cactus Campaign.
RESERVES
Ben Gamel (CF): 0-2, 1 K – Gamel, who is looking to to make the roster as a veteran invitee, was the only reserve to come to the plate multiple times. He struck out swinging to end the sixth (only batter Guilbeau faced) and grounded out to second to end the game.
Bradley Zimmer (RF): 0-1 – Zimmer grounded out to second in the eighth. Not sure how much a single at-bat, good or bad, factors into roster decisions at this point in Spring Training.
Bobby Bradley (1B): 0- 1 – Same can be said for Bradley, who followed with an inning-ending groundout to third.
The following reserves did not make a plate appearance on Wednesday night:
Owen Miller (2B)
Jose Fermin (3B)
Harold Ramirez (LF)
PITCHERS
Trevor Stephan: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 K – Stephan continues to be a strikeout machine having punched out twelve batters in 8.1 innings (48% of all of his outs in Arizona this spring). Last night’s Ks came against Triple-A projectee Wyatt Mathisen and major league backup Trayce Thompson.
