2020 in review: Not much to go off of for Beau Taylor considering he was a depth catcher for the Tribe in 2020. Taylor played in seven games and had 21 at-bats. He only managed one hit with two RBI. To get a better look at the 31 year old catcher we will have to dive in to his minor league career numbers .
At the plate: Taylor role is well known to be backup catcher and defensive depth a this point in his career. He’s 31 years old and only had 51 career major league at-bats. His .118/.237/.255 split is nothing that will wow you in those plate appearances. Meanwhile he did produce a little bit at the plate in Triple-A in 2019; hitting .247 with eight HR and 36 RBi in 279 plate appearances. In his entire minor league career he has hit .258 with 41 HR and 338 RBI in 711 minor league career games. He has shown the ability to work a walk in the minors, between a 10% and 14% walk rate.
Beyond the stats: As noted, Taylor has shown good walk rates in the minors and was +1 in Fangraphs’ DRS in 2020, so his defense as a catcher is strong. He threw out two of four base runners when he played in 2020. In Triple-A in 2019 he threw out 11 of 38 (28%) so not bad. He’s really only viably on the 40 man roster for defense and depth. He does at least have a solid glove and arm.
Fantasy outlook: Shouldn’t be a consideration in any league type. Purely a depth catcher.
