CARIBBEAN SERIES – ROUND ROBIN DAY 5

Puerto Rico 9, Panama 8

Giovanni Soto (RP, Puerto Rico): 2IP, H, BB, K, W, BS – Puerto Rico somehow avoided disaster when its starter allowed five runs in 0.2IP. Soto came on in the fifth and did allow a single that let Panama tie the game at 6-6, but Puerto Rico responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and Soto was good through his second inning and earned the win despite being pinned with a blown save. He only allowed a hit that led to an earned run that wasn’t charged to him. Yet he still got the win. Baseball stats are confusing sometimes. Further proof you can’t scout the box score.

Dominican Republic 3, Columbia 2

Melky Cabrera (OF, Dominican Republic): 2-5, RBI, R, 6 LOB – Cabrera drove in the tying run in the seventh inning, and it’s a good thing he did and his country won. He left six runners on base by himself and they left 12 on base as a team.

Robel Garcia (2B, Dominican Republic): 1-4 – One of the newest members of the Los Angeles Angels doubled in the sixth that led to Melky Cabrera scoring the game tying run on the next hit.

Mexico 4, Venezuela 3

Jose Guadalupe Chavez (SS, Mexico): 2-5, R – Chavez did his job by getting on base at the top of the order twice and scoring. He also helped turn two double plays in the win.

Derrick Loop (RP, Mexico): 0.2 IP, H, BB, K – not the best outing for Loop’s WHIP but he managed to keep Venezuela off the board, which is enough to ask from a reliever.

Niuman Romero (3B, Venezuela): 0-3, 2 BB – Romero, who has typically been a very solid player every year in winter was issued two intentional walks. That inflated his .500 right.

Yapson Gomez (RP, Venezuela): 0.1 IP – The LOOGY lives on in winter ball!

Australian Baseball League

Brisbane Bandits 12, Canberra Calvary 5

Andrew Campbell (DH, Brisbane): 2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, HR – Campbell had a nice day at the plate in the blowout win and was actually lated replaced in the game by a former Tribe minor leaguer.

Ryan Battaglia (PH-DH, Brisbane): 0-1 – No hits in his only at bat replacing his former fellow Tribe farmhand.
