DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM) SEMIFINALS GAME 3 (BEST-OF-7)

AGUILAS CIBAENAS 3, TOROS DEL ESTE 1 (TOROS LEAD 2-1)

CURRENT INDIAN

Anthony Gose (RP, Toros del Este): 1 IP, perfect ,1 K – Gose continues to dominate LIDOM. In twelve games (ten regular season and two in the semifinals), Gose has allowed only one earned run (and no unearned) on five hits (including a solo home run) and four walks while striking out eleven in twelve innings pitched. His playoff form has been even better, hurling a near-perfect pair of frames (walked one man on Saturday in Game 1).

FORMER INDIANS

Abraham Almonte (CF, Toros de Este): 1-4, 2 K – Almonte led off the game with a single to right field for his first hit of the Dominican postseason.

Yasiel Puig (RF, Toros del Este): 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI – Puig’s two-out RBI double in the eighth not only kept the Toros from being shut out, it also provided the La Romana side with their only extra-base hit of the contest.

Melky Cabrera (starting LF, Aguilas Cibaenas): 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K – Cabrera drove in the Aguilas’ first run of the evening and scored the second later in the bottom of the first. These would be the only runs they would need, but they went ahead and scored a third later in the frame anyway.

Robel Garcia (2B, Aguilas Cibaenas): 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 K – Garcia drove in said third run on a line-drive single to center, the first of his two hits of the evening, a feat no one else on either side achieved in this contest.

GIGANTES DEL CIBAO 3, ESTRELLAS OREINTALES 2 (GIGANTES LEAD 3-0)

FORMER INDIAN

Derrick Loop (RP, Gigntes del Cibao): BS (1st of the playoffs), 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R (earned), 1 K – Given his abrupt change in not only team, but country (hope to have more on this in a future column, still confirming some details), I’m not sure much more could have been expected of Loop in his first LIDOM game in a decade,

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE (LVBP)

CARIBES DE ANZOATEGUI 3, BRAVOS DE MARGARITA 2

CURRENT INDIAN

Andruw Monasterio (SS, Caribes de Anzoategui): 1-3, 1 BB – Monasterio extended his hitting streak to six games on Monday night. Including his stats so far in a suspended game being completed tomorrow, which the LVBP website already has baked into his season totals, Andruw is slashing .333/.384/.455 with six RBI and four stolen bases in 22 games.

FORMER INDIANS

Niuman Romero (3B, Caribes de Anzoategui): 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB – Romero continues to rake in Venezuela. His slash line (again, including the suspended game so far) stands at .340/.452/.505 with ten RBI and an 11:20 K:BB ratio in thirty games.

Henry Martinez (RP, Caribes de Anzoategui): H (6), 1 BB, 1 K – Since a rough outing against the Cardenales de Lara on December 22 (1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R [2 earned], 1 HR allowed) that accounted for his lone blown save of the campaign, Martinez has been stellar (6 G, 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K – the run coming in the lone bad outing of this stretch on December 30, also the source of the third of an inning).

CARDENALES DE LARA 22, LEONES DEL CARACAS 10

FORMER INDIAN

Carlos Rivero (starting 3B, Cardenales de Lara): 3-4, 3 R, 5 RBI, 1 BB – Incredibly, this is not the only time Rivero has gone 3-for-4 with a trio of runs this season (3-4, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI on December 19 against the Bravos de Margarita). The five RBI, however, were a season high.
