Things may have started out slow but things picked up on Wednesday in the Winter Leagues. The IBI’s Daniel Sherriff takes you Around the Farm.


Criollos de Caguas 1, Atenienses de Manati 3


Johnathan Rodriguez (RF, Atenienses de Manati) – 0-2, 1 SO – Rodriguez didn’t get a base hit but he did advance Ray Morales to second base on a groundout in the fourth inning which paved the way for Edwin Arroyo to bring him home an a RBI-double to tie the game.

Indios de Mayaquez 0, RA12 1


Joab Gonzalez (SS, RA12) – 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 SO – Gonzalez’s sac fly in the fourth inning was all RA12 needed to finally get its first win of the Puerto Rican League.


Jonathan Laureano (1B, Indios de Mayaguez) – 0-0 – Laureano came into the game in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement for Xavier Valentin.


Navegantes del Magallanes 4, Leones del Caracas


Anthony Vizcaya (RP, Navegantes del Magallanes) – 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 0 SO – The righty bounced back after a tough outing yesterday. He’s allowed just three runs in 14 games in the Venezuelan League.

Caribes de Anzoategui 4, Cardenales de Lara 1


Andruw Monasterio (2B, Caribes de Anzoategui) – 0-3, 1 SO – Monasterio had a slow day on Wednesday.


Niuman Romero (3B, Caribes de Anzoategui) – 0-1 – The third baseman only had one at-bat as he was pulled from the game in the fourth inning and replaced by Fernandi Kelli.

Henry Martinez (RP, Caribes de Anzoategui) – 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 0 SO – Martinez was shaky to start the eighth inning after allowing the first two batters to reach but did his best impression of Houdini by retiring the next three batters to escape unscathed.

Yonathan Mendoza (DH, Cardenales de Lara) – 1-5, 1 SO – Mendoza extended his on-base streak to seven games as he singled with two outs in the ninth frame.

Carlos Rivero (3B, Cardenales de Lara) – 1-3, 1 BB – Whatever injury Rivero suffered on Tuesday was not serious enough to keep him on the bench. Despite getting a hit he left some runners on base in the fifth inning as he grounded out with two men on the base paths.

Luis Oviedo (RP, Cardenales de Lara) – 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 SO – The former Indians’ pitching prospect was teetering on the edge of disaster to start the sixth inning as he allowed two base hits to put runners at the corners with just one out but got Monasterio to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Yapson Gomez (RP, Cardenales de Lara) – 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 0 SO – The southpaw’s run of flawless relief came to an end. He allowed two runs on four straight hits to open the eighth and left with the bases loaded.


Gigantes del Cibao 4, Toros del Este 2


Anthony Gose (RP, Toros del Este) – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 2 SO – The southpaw hurled two perfect innings of relief.


Abraham Almonte (PH-CF, Toros del Este) – 0-0, 1 BB – Almonte came in to pinch-hit for Raudy Read in the eighth. He worked a walk that in turn led to a bases-loaded at-bat for Miguel Andujar but he struck out.

Estrellas Orientales 1, Tigres del Licey 6


Oscar Gonzalez (LF, Estrellas Orientales) – 2-2, 1 RBI – Gonzalez came off the bench to take over for Eric Filia in left field during the fourth inning. He would then go perfect at the plate including an insurance RBI-single in the eighth frame.


Francisco Mejia (DH, Estrellas Orientales) – 1-4, 1 SO – Mejia led off the ninth with a single to try and get something going but it was no use.

Sandy León (C, Tigres del Licey) – 1-4 – León’s sole hit came in the fifth inning. He had a chance to drive some runs home in the second inning but grounded out to end the frame.


Charros de Jalisco 6, Sultanes de Monterrey 7


Brennan Bernardino (RP, Charros de Jalisco) – 0.2 IP, 1 BS, 4 R/1 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO – The southpaw was called on for the save with Charros de Jalisco holding a three-run lead. That washed away in the blink of an eye as Bernardino loaded the bases then paid the price on a fielding error by the third baseman to see two runs cross home plate. He had a chance to get out of it by getting a double play but then threw a wild pitch to watch Sultanes de Monterrey walk it off.

Aguilas de Mexicali 1, Tomateros de Culiacan 0


Jose Guadalupe Chavez (SS, Tomateros de Culiacan) – 2-4, 1 2B, 1 SO – Chavez doubled in the third with two outs to put runners at second and third but Ramiro Pena couldn’t get the job done and flied out


Vaqueros de Monteria 12, Tigres de Cartagena 2


Dayan Frias (LF, Vaqueros de Monteria) – 0-0, 1 BB – Frias replaced Rubi Silva in left field in the eighth inning. He then walked in the ninth to help keep the line moving for Vaqueros de Monteria.

Gaspar Palacio (PH-2B, Tigres de Cartagena) – 0-0, 1 R, 1 BB – Palacio pinch-hit for Jhonatan Lozada in the eighth. He would come around to score after walking on a fielding error.


Jhon Pelufo (RP, Vaqueros de Monteria) – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 SO – Despite allowing the leadoff hitter to get on board via a walk Pelufo managed to strand him by retiring the next three batters.

Gigantes de Barranquilla 6, Caimanes de Barranquilla 5


Daniel Aguilar (CF, Gigantes de Barranquilla) – 2-4, 2 RBI – Aguilar came up with a clutch hit in the sixth inning as he knocked in two runs on a single to put Gigantes de Barranquilla up by three runs.


Audy Ciriaco (3B, Caimanes de Barranquilla) – 2-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI – Ciriaco enjoyed one of his best games in the Colombian League to date. He brought Caimanes de Barranquilla to within one run with one swing of the bat as he connected for a three-run homer in the eighth frame.
