Lake County 3, Clinton Lumberkings 1

Check out our special podcast re-living the Captains 2010 Midwest League championship win and season

Our final edition of the This day in Indians minor league history posts for 2020 ends fittingly with the 2010 Lake County Captains championship in the Midwest League.

Giovanni Soto, who had joined the Captains from the Jhonny Peralta trade two months earlier, retired the first eight batters he faced until a two out single in the third inning. Soto faced the minimum still through three innings because the two-out single was erased by future Gold Glove catcher Roberto Perez.

Soto walked the leadoff batter in the fourth, but still faced the minimum through four because he picked off that runner. In the sixth with two outs was the first time that Soto got in trouble, allowing a single and a walk when he was finally pulled.

Soto’s final line was 5.2 allowing just three hits, a run, two walks, and nine strikeouts. Unfortunately it wasn’t good enough for a win.

Before Soto was pulled in the sixth, Lake County did add a run on a ground-out double play that scored Chase Burnette.

Casey Frawley, who was the heart of that team in 2010 and came through with several clutch hits, put the Captains ahead for good with a two-out single in the sixth.

Greg Folgia drove in the final run of the night in the seventh with a sac fly.

Yoervis Medina surprisingly pitched the full game for the Lumberkings, going eight innings and allowing all three runs (two earned), walking one and striking out seven.

Jeff Johnson pitched out of the sixth inning and Ted Kubiak and Mickey Callaway turned to Preston Guilmet to finish the game.

Not only did Preston Guilmet earn the save, but he pitched the final three innings.

Guilmet struck out five in three innings. He struck out 79 in 52 innings and had 11 saves and had a terrific season that year. To be asked to throw three innings in the final game of the year with a two run lead.

The game was also played in a VERY tidy two hours and nine minutes.
