Lake County Captains 6, Greenville Drive 5 (16 innings)

With the new runner on 2nd rule in the minors (and majors for 2020 only, hopefully) 16 inning games might become extinct.

Back in 2006, the Lake County Captains and Greenville Drive played in a game that was 16 innings long.

The series started with a nine hour bus drive in Greenville, South Carolina when the Captains played in the South Atlantic League.

The game went into extra innings in a 3-3 tie. PJ Hiser homered in the 11th for the Captains and Mike Conroy singled in a run to make it 5-3, Captains.

The Drive responded with a pair of solo homers in the bottom half of the 11th inning to tie it again, 5-5.

Both teams struggled to put together any scoring chances until the Captains broke through in the 16th inning. Jose Chavez singled to lead off the inning, Chris Gimenez reached on an error with one out to push Valdez to third. A fielder’s choice from Mike Butia scored Chavez, which gave the Captains the winning run.

The two teams were 5-31 with runners in scoring position.

Kinston Indians 22, Lynchburg Hillcats 10

Jared Goedert drove in five runs in this win for the K-Tribe that scored 11 runs in the second and third innings combined.

But shortstop prospect Josh Rodriguez drove in nine runs thanks to a two-run homer and a grand slam as well as a two run double and a bases loaded walk. That accounted for 10% of his RBI and homers in 2007 (82 and 20, respectively).

The offensive outpouring of support was good for the K-Tribe because starter Frank Hermann was charged with all 10 runs the Hillcats scored in his four innings of work. Christopher Niesel and Neil Wagner combined for five scoreless innings to make the offense stand up.

Columbus Clippers 8, Buffalo Bisons 1

Danny Salazar fired five perfect innings on 52 pitches. Preston Guilmet followed with two perfect innings, and Vinnie Pestano had a perfect eighth inning. Cla Rapada allowed the only hit in the ninth inning to Buffalo in the win.
