While the no-hitters and one-hitters, rightly, get most of the attention in terms of stellar pitching performances, there are many cases of a pitching staff dominating despite allowing multiple hits. One such case occurred at Canal Park four years ago today.

Starter Rob Kaminsky began the brilliance with six innings of five-hit baseball in which he allowed only one run. While only one of those eighteen runs was via strikeout, he threw 58 strikes in his 95 pitches and kept the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays) from doing much with those five baserunners, which was crucial as the RubberDucks only managed one run in regulation innings (CF Bradley Zimmer on a two-out line-drive single to left field by 1B Nellie Rodriguez, who was thrown out trying to advance to second), relegating Kaminsky to a tough-luck no decision.

Reliever Robbie Aviles took it to another level, finishing out the scheduled nine frames while only allowing three baserunners (one hit, one walk, one hit batter), none of whom scored, and striking out a pair. J.P. Feyersien was even better in the lone extra inning necessary as he punched out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect tenth. He would earn his third victory in four decisions to that point in 2016 after Akron baseball legend Jordan Smith, who was patrolling right field (where his mail was probably being delivered to at this point, the middle of his third of four seasons at the Corner of State and Main*) in Canal Park that Sunday afternoon, drove in C Jeremy Lucas on a line drive triple (his second of the season) to right at 4:40 PM.

*He really was at THE Corner of State and Main as that’s where right field is located at Canal Park.
