May 26, 2014
The grills had cooled down. The memorial services concluded. Slightly more than 1,260 miles of auto racing had been run. It was about time for the long weekend to give way to the first work week of summer. Memorial Day weekend 2014 was nearly over. Only one thing remained: The Columbus Clippers vs. the Charlotte Knights (Chicago white Sox) at the Corner of Neil and Nationwide.
At first glance, it seemed like a brief coda to the weekend;s festivities. The game was low-scoring throughout, with the Knights leading 3-2 through eight and a half frames. Then came the bottom of the ninth. With the Clippers down to their last out and pinch runner Tim Fedroff (in for 1B David Cooper, who had walked earlier in the inning) at first, RF Carlos Moncrief picked up a free pass of his own to put Fedroff in scoring position. On the next at-bat LF Tyler Holt hit a fly ball to left field and…the double scored the tying run and ultimately sent the game into extras. The holiday weekend was not over yet!
After two and a half more innings of scoreless baseball, C (and number nine hitter) Luke Carlin singled to left to lead off the bottom of the twelfth. On the next pitch, a bunt single from SS Jose Ramirez (Wonder whatever happened to him?) sent Carlin to second. On the very next pitch, 2B Elliot Johnson (who started the game at LF) hit a ground ball to center to send what was left of a crowd of 11,505 (including some baseball writer whose name rhymes with Arthur Kinney who was in town en route home from a little car race called the Indianapolis 500 – maybe you’ve heard of it) happy at 10:43 PM.
Other notable players to appear in the game include: Jason Kipnis, Jesus Aguilar, Giovanny Urshela, and Vinnie Pestano
