Welcome to another edition of “The 2006 Kinston Indians clobbering an unsuspecting Carolina League team”. Today;s edition finds us in Salem, Virginia on a clear 74-degree late spring night. 2,004 are in the stands to see the hometown Avalanche (Houston Astros) try to stop the Kinstonian juggernaut.

As you can guess from the first paragraph (and the fact I’m highlighting this game on an Indians-centric site) that they failed. Miserably. The Avs managed a grand total of eight baserunners (six hits, two walks) off of the K-Tribe trio of starter Scott Lewis and relievers Aaron Laffey and Kyle Collins, who combined to strike out Salem hitters ten times, including a third of the lineup twice each.

The Indians’ offensive box was spectacular as well. Four Kinston hitters crossed the plate safely twice each (CF Trevor Crowe, 1B Stephen Head, RF Ryan Goleski, and LF Jordan Brown). While C Wyatt Toregas didn’t score, he drove in three runs to lead the Eastern North Carolina nine on this evening and also led the team with a trio of hits including the team’s only two extra-base hits of the thrashing…er…ballgame (both doubles). Wyatt ended the game with a stratospheric .348/.445/.587 slash in 29 games.

The win improved the K-tribe’s record to 31-12 and continued their march to what would end up a nine and a half-game margin between them and the runner up Winston-Salem Dash (Chicago White Sox) for the CL South first half championship.
