The Columbus Clippers and Gwinnett Braves were in a tight battle with the host Braves, trailing 5-3, in the eighth inning.

Luis Valbuena hit a two run homer to tie the game at 5-5, heading into the bottom half of the penultimate frame.

Still tied 5-5 in the ninth, Lonnie Chisenhall led off with a walk and Chad Huffman was hit by a pitch to put the first two Clippers on to start the inning. Travis Buck sacrifice bunted them over, because having Travis Buck lay a bunt down might be better than letting him swing away. The Braves opted to intentionally walk Jason Kipnis to load the inning so two future Indians were on base with the game tied with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Luke Carlin, another future Indian and future Captains skipper cleared the bases with a two out, three run double to give Columbus the 8-5 lead.

The Clippers closed out the win in the bottom of the ninth. Corey Kluber started this contest and allowed four runs in five innings to earn a no decision. Future fringe major league arms Zach Putnam and Josh Judy earned the win and save, respectively.

The Lakewood BlueClaws and Lake County Captains came out guns’a blazin in this one. Lakewood scored three runs in the top of the first at Classic Park with the first two batters reaching on an error and then a single and an error.

A sac fly, two singles and a double added the three runs.

The Captains responded with four runs right back in the bottom half of the first. Roman Pena and Matt McBride doubled home a run each and Jared Goedert launched a two run homer to erase the defecit.

The Captains went on to win a back and forth contest thanks to a seven run eighth thanks to a homer from Jason Denham, a two run single by McBride, a Carlos Rivero RBI single and a homer from Felipe Garcia.

Josh Tomlin got the win in relief, allowing a hit and a walk in 2.1 innings while striking out three.

Sam Haggerty’s near miss of hitting for the cycle and Ka’ai Tom’s three RBI game led an 11-3 win for the Lynchburg Hillcats over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

Haggerty was called out on strikes in the first inning, doubled in a run in the third and score third, singled in the fourth, tripled in the sixth and walked in the seventh.

Tom drive in a run on one hit thanks to a groundout RBI, a sac fly in the sixth and again the seventh.

Haggerty went onto be part of the Kevin Plawecki trade in December of 2018 and made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2019. He’s currently in the Mariners organization.
